In 2005, 250 members of the San Miguel community joined together to bring opera to our unique city with an initial event in the Plaza de Toros attended by approximately 4500 San Miguelenses and adopted "San Miguelenses", remembered as one of the most exciting cultural events in the recent history of the city. Opera de San Miguel has as a long-term vision of operatic productions in the historic, monumental settings of the city itself, along with efforts to provide exposure to the art form to all segments of the community and educational opportunities for young people.

The important grants offered through the concurso extend this educational thrust to the all-important professional development of young, uniquely talented Mexican artists. The Concurso San Miguel, now entering its fourth year, is quickly earning a national reputation, attracting young artists from all over the Republic of Mexico and bringing acclaim to San Miguel de Allende as the rising opera headquarters of the Bajio.
